Sunday 13th August
Visited Sanjay Gandhi Animal Rescue &Hospital today ..Got a tour with the director Nidhi and we had a good chat felt very welcomed.
Sanjay is the biggest rescue centre in Delhi and one of the oldest, started with a bequeath from New South Wales Australia, lady called Ruth Cowell to the Gandhi family to start it up in 1980..On 4 acres has over 2 to 3000 animals at one time all rescue..Saw a camel used for rides, birds, cats, goats, cows chickens, donkeys peacooks, dogs of course..Have a clinic for companion animals which was full all the time, 200 a day she said , separate vacation clinic for public. Disabled dogs also..free roaming animals cows/camel etc. Adoptions possibly 1 to 2 aday..also have pedigree breeds abandoned also for adoption..Had some new building going on for more rooms for dogs..Run solely on donations of course. Have a 24 hour ambulance that goes out for free....De sexing programme for street dogs also She said about 90 percent release for street dogs which is wonderful. Feels education is slowly getting through and seen some good positive change for the animals but a lot more needed...Another rescue centre doing a amazing job, helping and saving these animals lives and making a difference for street dogs and there population.
Rescue centres in India barley survive on donations alone this centre would appreciate any finical help or better still come and volunteer, she was very keen for me to stay also, and they have somewhere on site where you can say. Needing all the help they can get.
When I arrived I was met with a truck full of dogs going out to be released where they were picked up from... Put a big smile on my face as I looked at them all smiling back at me. And of course just about cried again, this time HAPPY tears., this is what it is all about and will always need support in doing that.
